Ingredients

  • 2 lbs cubed steak
  • Flour, for coating the steak
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp pepper
  • Oil, for browning
  • 2 envelopes onion soup mix
  • 2 cups water
  • 3 tbsp flour
  • 1/2 cup water

Instructions

  1. Step 1
    1

Mix the flour, salt, and pepper in a shallow dish. Coat the cube steak in the seasoned flour.

  2. Step 2
    2

Heat oil in a skillet over medium heat. Brown the steak on both sides, but do not cook it through. Place the browned steak in a crockpot set to low.

  3. Step 3
    3

In a small bowl, whisk together 1/2 cup water and 3 tablespoons flour until smooth and no lumps remain.

  4. Step 4
    4

In the same skillet, add the onion soup mix and 2 cups of water. Stir well, bring to a boil, and scrape up the browned bits from the pan.

  5. Step 5
    5

Slowly whisk the flour-and-water slurry into the onion soup mixture. Stir until the gravy thickens slightly, then pour it over the steak in the crockpot.

  6. Step 6
    6

Cook on low for 4 hours, or until the steak is tender and the gravy has thickened. Add a little more water if the gravy becomes too thick.

Tips & Variations

  • Serve over mashed potatoes, rice, or egg noodles to soak up the gravy.
  • Add sliced onions or mushrooms to the crockpot for extra flavor.
  • Gravy thickens as it cools — add a splash of water to thin it out when reheating.
