Ingredients
- 2 1/4 cups brown sugar
- 3/4 pound dried pickled jalapeños, drained
- 1 1/2 tsp granulated garlic (not powder)
- 1 1/2 tsp kosher salt
- 3/4 tsp coarse ground pepper
- 3 cups ketchup
- 3 tbsp molasses
- 1 1/2 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
- 3/4 tsp liquid smoke
Instructions
1Combine the first five ingredients (brown sugar, jalapeños, granulated garlic, salt, and pepper) in a saucepan and mix well — no heat yet.
2Add the last four ingredients (ketchup, molasses, Worcestershire, and liquid smoke) and stir together.
3Turn the heat to about medium-high. From this point, stir continually.
4Bring the mixture to a boil.
5Once it starts to boil, turn the heat down to low and simmer for 15–20 minutes, whisking the whole time so the sugar doesn't burn. This lets some of the water evaporate and thickens the sauce.
6Remove from heat and let it sit for about 10 minutes to cool.
7Pour into bottles and let sit on the counter for a few hours to cool all the way off.
Tips & Variations
- Great as a marinade or dipping sauce.
- Try it on ribs, chicken, burgers, meatloaf, or to add flavor to beans and chili.
- For a smoky boost, use hickory liquid smoke or smoked jalapeños.
